From a small group of less than 10 families in 1965, the adyar prayer group grew to be a conglomerate of five prayer groups at Adyar, Thirvanmiyur, Velachery, Pallikarnai and Padur consisting of nearly 220 families.

The group did not have a critical mass to think of forming a parish or having its own premises till 1990. The members were part of the Marthoma church, Chetpet. Worship was conducted on every second Sunday at the CSI house of prayer, Adyar, except for a brief period in early eighties when it was shifted to the St.Louis Catholic Church at Gandhi Nagar. The initiative to acquire land to build a church for the Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery prayer groups was initiated in the year 1993.Despite several efforts, a suitable land for the church could not be identified. In 1996, at a prayer meeting in Mr.C.P.Koshy?s house, our church member Mr.M.I.Thomas graciously agreed to sell land he owned at Tharamani measuring over five grounds at the market price . A spontaneous response from the members of the prayer group under the leadership of Rev.P.T.Thomas helped to raise additional fundsto cover the cost of the land and registration charges. The land was purchased in two stages on 25 October and 11 November 1996 in the name of the diocesan Bishop. At the time of purchase, the land was not demarcated and was part of a low lying area under knee-deep water.A granite retaining wall was raised three feet above the ground and the plot was filled up partially.

In March 2000, a new committee for the South Madras Marthoma Community Development project was formed under the Chairmanship of Rev.Mahesh Thomas Cherian with Late Dr.K.C.G.Varghese as Convener and Mr.C.P.Koshy as Secretary. The new committee met the Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Thomas Mar Thimotheos on 19th March 2000 and sought his suggestions and blessings on 3rdJune 2000.The committee met the Rev.Dr.Philipose Mar Chrysostum Metropolitan and then appraised him about the progress made so far. His encouraging words and inspiring motivation further strengthened the confidence of the members to launch a massive fund raising program through a music concert on 30thSeptember 2000.This was a great success. On 13thMay2001, Rt. Rev. Thomas Mar Thimotheos , Bishop of Chennai-Bangalore Diocese laid the foundation stone for the building in the presence of Rev. Mahesh Thomas Cherian, Vicar and Rev. Zacharia Alexander, Assistant Vicar of the Chetpet parish and well wishers from sister parishes.

There was an initial delay in the project execution. M/s. Pithavadian & partners were appointed as the architects. A new building committee was formed with Late Mr.K.C.G.Varghese as Convener, Dr.P.K.Philip and Mr.C.P.Koshy as members. Mr. Gigi George was entrusted with the responsibility of getting the necessary approval from CMDA and other statutory bodies. Since there was no approach road to the site, a road had to be laid before the work began. It was decided that instead of appointing a contractor, the church building program committee will supervise the construction work.

The construction work started on 11th July 2004 in the presence of the vicar Rev. Dr. Kurian Thomas. By November 2004 the building estimates were revised to cover for two floors. The roof was laid on 21 May 2005. With the contributions from members of the parish and well wishers & the funds raised through a music program in October 2005, the project could be successfully executed . An adjacent plot measuring two grounds was purchased on 24 January 2006. The newly built church was inaugurated on 22 April 2006 by our Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius.
