In the year 1972, Three (3) families approached CSI St. Peter’s church, Meenambakkam Pastorate to get permission for a local gathering on Sundays in Ullagaram to conduct Prayers and Service. With the consent from Pastorate and with the approval from Rev. A.T. Pandian, Secretary Mr. Robert Moses, & Treasurer Mr. Arumainayagam, Church gathering was commenced in Ullagaram. The families of Mr. A. Aruldoss, Mr. Selvaraj and Mr. Sundaram are the first three families who started the prayers and service. Prayer Service was conducted at the residence of Mr. Kovil nadar (Father of Mr. Selvaraj), in KVK Swamy Street, Ullagaram; who generously opened the door for this great start. During the year 1973, a separate hut within the same residence compound (in the place of a chicken farm) was offered by Mr. Kovil nadar and family to conduct prayers and services. Mr. A. Aruldoss played a vital role in forming this church. He led the church congregation and was instrumental in forming regular church services in the name of “House of Prayer”. During this period it was arranged to conduct the Holy Communion once a month and remaining weeks with regular sermon and services by the families. Within a period of 10 to 12 months time, families of Mr. I.A. Durai, Mr. S. Paramanandam, Mr. G. Sigamani, Mr. R. David, Mr. A. Charles Paul, Mr. M. Asirvadam and Mr. Solomon started participating in Sunday services to glorify our Lord Jesus Christ. When Meenambakkam Pastorate was divided into two separate pastorates during the year 1973, St. John Church, Palavanthangal foundation was laid by Bishop The Rt. Rev. Lesslie Newbigin. On 6th July, 1975 Chennai Bishop The Rt. Rev. Sundar Clarke dedicated St. John Church, Palavanthangal and our “House of Prayer” was attached with St. John church but continued in the same residence premises. Mr. A. Aruldoss as Secretary and Mr. I.A. Durai as a treasurer served for Lords’ ministries. During rainy seasons, sometimes water would raise upto knee level, as the prayer house was located in a lake area; however the families gathered with faith and continued to praise God and conducted Prayers. When the members in “House of Prayer” started increasing, the premises could not accommodate the congregation. During rainy season, it was difficult for all church members to reach out to the place & participate in services. To address all the concerns, Secretary A. Aruldoss along with church elders looked out for a separate bigger place in Medavakkam main road area. With God’s plan and sincere efforts of the elders, a place was located near Ullagaram, Oil mill bus stop. During Oct 1981, a hut and a water-well was constructed in this new place and by Rev. D. Rajasekar Church commenced functioning with the name “St. James Church“. Later in the year 1983, this land was registered in the presence of Rev. D. Samuel Jacob.
