The Orthodox Christians living in Ulhasnagar and surrounding areas felt the dire need of a church to worship, so they approached H. G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilos to grant permission for starting worship. In the initial stage, a school hall was rented out for this purpose and the first Holy Qurbana was conducted on 4th September, 1988. After 3 months, H. G. proclaimed through his Kalpana that the church would henceforth be called as St. Mary’s Orthodox Congregation, Ulhasnagar. The humble beginning of this church was when Rev. Fr. Lazarus O I C started conducting the Holy Qurbana twice in a month. After a long negotiation, a suitable place was found and it was decided to build a church in the month of December 1989 and was registered as St. Mary’s Orthodox Church. The newly built church was blessed and sanctified by Metropolitan H. G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilos on 18th Feb 1990. His Grace offered Rs. 20,000 for its further needs. From June 1993 onwards, H. G. gave the permission to conduct the Holy Qurbana regularly and Rev. Fr. A. V. Paulose was given the charge of being the 1st vicar of the church. In 1996, the church was renovated during the tenure of Rev. Fr. P. J. James and a parsonage was built. The church and the parsonage were blessed and inaugurated by H. G. Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, in 1999. In 2004, cross vault was also built which was inaugurated on 16th January 2005. Rev. Fr. Benjamin S. Philip, Rev. Fr. George Abraham, Rev. Fr. Scaria Varghese, Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Kadavil, Rev. Fr. Prisquilas T. Peter and Rev. Fr. M. E. Joseph served as vicars. Rev. Fr. Thomaskutty C is the present vicar.
