St Joseph Church is situated at the far end of Colaba. The parish stretches from Colaba post office on the city side right up to the seashore at the other end and is surrounded by the Defence establishment and the Naval Hospital INS Ashwini.

Today this parish caters not only to the Catholic defence personnel and their domestics but also to the civilians living in apartments on the main road and to two very large slums, Geeta Nagar and Ganesh Murthy Nagar, situated along the sea. Out of the 360 families that make up the parish, 162 families are from the slums, living in small shacks, without proper toilets and having to carry water from the municipal common taps. Along with 23 families of domestics in the Naval Officers’ Residential Area (Nofra), 31 families of domestics in the Colaba P.O. area and other domestics from the Dandi area, nearly two-thirds of the parish is made up of the economically downtrodden and marginalized, very close to the poverty-line.
