Holy Magi Church Gorai

The Holy Magi Church has witnessed Gorai grow from a tiny fishing community to a bustling village. The Franciscans built the first church at Gorai in the 16th century (around 1630). However, this church situated in the fields near the banks of Vairala Talav, was completely destroyed at the beginning of the 17th century. The ruins are still visible but concealed by entangling vines and roots of huge banyan trees. Later Holy Magi Church was built in 1810, about 1.2 kilometers away from Vairala Talao. At that time the Gorai parish comprised of three villages — Gorai, Manori and Uttan and had a Catholic population of 72 adults and 12 children. It is also known as The Church of Three Kings & is structurally over 200 years old and one of the oldest and strongest churches in the state. The old carved wooden altar and the antique furniture as well as the ornately carved murals on the walls have been restored meticulously to its original glory.
