In 1976 Fr. K. Mathai from New York was invited to conduct the Holy Week services for the Philadelphia ecumenical group. Later, in September 1976, he moved to Philadelphia from New York with his family for permanent stay. Seeing the enthusiasm of the Orthodox Church members in Philadelphia, he took the initiative in organizing an Orthodox parish under the Malankara Orthodox Church in India with the support of Dn. Dr. Paul Varky.

On October 10, 1976, Fr. K. Mathai convened a general meeting of all Orthodox Church members living in the Philadelphia Metropolitan area by sending out an invitation letter. The agenda for the meeting was to explore the possibility of forming an Orthodox parish in Philadelphia. The meeting was conducted at the residence of the late Mr. M.M. Koshy, who then lived near the Einstein Medical Center in north Philadelphia. Fr. K. Mathai presided over the meeting.
