ST. GREGORIOS ORTHODOX SYRIAN CHURCH, PANVEL By the grace of God on 7th October 1991 seven orthodox family members at Panvel area assembled together and started a prayer meeting. With the permission of His Grace Dr Philipose Mar Theophilus, this prayer meeting was named as Panvel Mar Gregorios Orthodox Syrian Congregation. The first Holy Qurbana was conducted at St Andrew’s CNI Church Panvel, by Rev Fr Lazarus O I C, the then Diocesan Secretary. On 1st April 2001, the Diocesan Metropolitan His Grace Geevarghese Mar Coorilos elevated the Panvel congregation as St. Gregorios Orthodox Syrian Church. Rev Fr P J James was appointed as the first Vicar. In the beginning, Panvel Orthodox congregation conducted its services at St Andrew’s CNI Church, St Francis CNI Church and Panvel St George School. Parishioners with great efforts purchased a plot admeasuring 75 cent .On1st June 2006, the construction work began and from 24th February 2008 onwards the Holy Qurbana was started temporarily in the under construction church building.In the mean time, St Gregorios Orthodox Syrian Charitable Trust was registered under the BPT act. On 11th and 12th June 2010, the present church was consecrated by the Diocesan Metropolitan H.G.Geevarghese Mar Coorilos.H.G. Mathews Mar Theodosius (Idukki) and H.G.Dr.Geevarghese Mar Yulios (Ahmedabad) were the co-celebrants. A cross vault constructed near the main entrance of the church which was dedicated in the names of Mother Mary, St Thomas, St George the Martyr and St Gregorios of Parumala on 11th November 2012.
