Mar Gregorios Orthodox Syrian church, situated at DehuRoad, a tiny town 25 km away from Pune towards Mumbai direction, has a history of about seven decades. In the year 1950, few Orthodox Christians residing in this area for employment purpose held prayer meetings at individual houses and remained attached to Pune parish, the only Orthodox Church that existed then. After bifurcation of Pune parish, the Dehu Road prayer group became part of Kirkee, St. Thomas Church & have had Holy Qurbana once in a while i.e, to say on fifth Sunday if it happens to be in a calendar month, in a class room of erstwhile Garrison school. Years passed and the prayer group members developed an earnest desire of having a worshipping place of their own, and thus in the year 1971, a piece of land was secured at Shitlanagar of DehuRoad and constructed a small building. It was consecrated by late lamented H.G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilus, the then Metropolitan of Bombay and Ankamaly. In the year 1984 this congregation attained the status of an independent ‘Edavaka’ and frequency of Holy Mass increased to two in a month. In order to facilitate stay of a priest, the members also put the concerted efforts of constructing a parsonage. Decades later the church building developed cracks and gaps necessitating its renovation and repair. An idea of replacing the church building with a new one was then mooted and by the blessing of God Almighty, the existing church was built. In 2002 the new church was consecrated by the then seniormost Metropolitan of Malankara, Sabharatnam H.G. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Osthathios assisted by Diocesan Metropolitan H.G. Geevarghese Mar Coorilos. Service of a full time Vicar was made available on all Sundays and other sacramental days. There are about 90 families attached to this church apart from other visiting believers. All the spiritual needs of the believers are met by the Vicar. There are three prayer groups functioning well. Intercession prayers are conducted on all prescribed days. Sunday School, MGOSCM, AMOSS, Youth Movement, Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam ,Elders forum are active in their respective places and functioning well. Members are active in conducting charity work and handy to help the needy. St. George Balikagram, a precious institution of Malankara Orthodox Church is only a stone’s throw away from this church. The members are at their services whenever they need. Rev. Fr. John Mathai is the present Vicar of this Parish.
